Death Stranding – An Unpopular Opinion

So, for those of you that missed it, there was a new trailer released yesterday for Death Stranding showing off some gameplay footage alongside giving us the November 2019 release date.

While this trailer looked really impressive, it has left a lot of people far more confused about what the story to the game will actually be, myself included, and has probably raised more questions than it answered. Once again we saw Mads Mikkelsen and Norman Reedus in their (what I assume to be) leading roles, we got a passing explanation of why there are babies in hars and we got to see a little more of the world that the game takes place in (yet another post-apocalyptic US).

The reason I’m titling this piece as an unpopular opinion is that the whole internet seems to have lit up with hype for Death Stranding but there are some, like me, that remain out of that big hype bubble. My personal reasoning for being so disinterested overall is that, so far, it all seems to be very “style without substance”. It might be just that, without any real story details, I dont understand why people are so hyped for this, or i might be able to see through something that just appears to throw big names and pretty visuals at a wall and see what sticks.

The way I see it, when this game launches we will end up with one of two outcomes: either it sells amazingly well, gets rave reviews and is worth all the hype or everyone rushes out to buy it on day one and it turns out to be a massive disappointment. At the moment, I’m more expecting it to be the latter but I really hope I’m wrong. Hideo Kojima has been responsible for a couple of great series in the past that I really enjoy (ZoE and MGS, obviously) but I’m starting to think he might really have been allowed to go a little too mad with this one.

Like I said, I hope I’m wrong and I’m sure time will tell. Just do me a favour? Don’t blame me if the game doesn’t live up to your hype when it launches. I’m not going to lie and say I’m not interested, I definitely am. If only to find out how it all pans out. This won’t be an early purchase for me, though, sorry.

OK, little rant over. If you read this far and fancy sharing your opinions, you know how to get in touch. I’m always happy to chat to fellow Gamers. Otherwise, I’ll say “cheers!” and you can go about your day.
